The Governor's School for the Arts Spring Orchestra Concert - Thursday Evening

From June 01, 2017 until June 01, 2017

Thursday, June 1 at 7:30 PM

Join the GSA Orchestra for a program featuring one of the very first performances of a newly-discovered work by Igor Stravinsky. Thought to have been destroyed after the 1917 revolution, the Chant Funèbre (1909) was never seen again after its first performance in Saint Petersburg. In 2016, it was uncovered in a room at the conservatory. Tonight, you will hear the first performance of this work in Virginia and the eleventh performance of the work since its premiere. Stravinsky's score for the ballet Petrushka follows. It has been performed thousands of times since its Paris premiere in 1911. GSA is honored to present it in its original version.
Opening the program will be works of Frank Martin (Ballade for Flute) and Edward Elgar (Concerto for Cello).   The GSA Orchestra welcomes its own musicians as soloists, Jared Robles (flute) and Yann Chémali (cello), both winners of the 2016-2017 Concerto Competition.
